The barnstorming baseball teams of        1920s are        grist        this graphic novel that follows      Jewish team,        Stars       David, through        Midwest in      broken-down bus, using        gimmick       exotic ethnicity       draw small-towners to        ir games. At this level, baseball      as much showbiz       sport, so       boost attendance,        team’s sole black player, billed as      “member of        lost tribe,” poses as      golem,      creature made       clay         brought       life by      rabbinical incantation. The scheme goes terribly awry, however, when        massive crowd it draws, inflamed by anti-Semitism, storms        field. Like its legendary model, this golem damages its creators. Sturm is      master       nuance, whose economical drawings effectively evoke        era, while his thoughtful compositions impressively capture action         atmosphere. He uses        national pastime       examine such equally American traits       racism         media hype. But mostly, this      particularly insightful take on                me       immigrants caught between        ir traditions and        ways       a new land.
