Eoin Colfer
Eoin Colfer’s bestselling antihero back Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident–the superb sequel to hyper-hyped Artemis Fowl, shortlisted for Whitbread Children’s Book of Year. The Arctic Incident sees slightly older, perhaps slightly more mellow arch-criminal Artemis recovered from his last adventure, richer now that he has his half a hoard fairy gold, happier since Clarice Starlingesque superfairy Captain Holly Short of LEPrecon returned his mother’s ailing mind full health.
But re still much unfinished business: Artemis Fowl Sr. disappeared when daring escapade designed free his family from ir criminal–not mention deeply lucrative–past move family’s assets into legitimate enterprises went horribly wrong. Held captive by Mafiya (the Russian organized crime syndicate) over two years, he has been declared officially dead, but Artemis Jr. knows his heart (yes, he does have one) that his beloved father still alive, he determined find him. Meanwhile Captain Short temporarily assignment Customs Excise punishment letting Fowl separate her her People from ir gold is finding her stakeout duties little dull. It soon becomes obvious that pair have need each other’s considerable skills, before long y are track an adventure that will ultimately have far-reaching consequences both of m.
If you enjoyed first book, you won’t be disappointed by second. Initially pace is little slower, and slightly more mellow Artemis certainly tad unnerving at first (particularly one of things that made him such an unusual character was fact that re was something distinctly unlikable about him), but once sparks between Holly Artemis begin fly, and adventure that tests ir endurance to ir emotional, physical, intellectual limits begins, pages just keep turning.
The high-tech hocus pocus, complex underworld, and James Bond-style storyline will keep even most reluctant reader enthralled. Add to mix fair dollop humor, occasional sprinkling right-on commentary about state of planet, enough hooks in story ensure you will be clamoring for next book. This chilling, thrilling adventure is seriously cool (in more ways than one!) must-read anyone age 9 older.
