While comic books trace        ir origins to        late 19th century, Superman, who debuted      1938’s Action Comics #1,      virtually synonymous with        medium. Yet,       Superman,        Complete History shows,        Man       Steel has also made      lasting impact      comic strips, film, toys, TV, radio,         even       Broadway. In this beautifully composed volume, Les Daniels collects rare         never-before-seen early artwork by Superman’s teenage creators, Jerry Siegel         Joe Shuster (including      two-page doodle from 1936 featuring early Superman costume designs),         he chronicles        evolution of        character from an orphan alien comics hero to      complex multimedia icon. Entire pages        devoted       photographs of        various costumes worn by TV         film incarnations,       numerous action figures         related toys, and       movie poster         stills. Several comics stories        also reproduced in        ir entirety.

Almost       impressive as        stunning art design      Daniels’s narrative: covering        60 years from 1938       1998, he collects interviews          several writer-artist teams that detail        changes in        Man       Steel         his relationships          Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Lex Luthor,         Perry White. Daniels’s examination of        “Death       Superman” story arc,      particular, is      fascinating study       Superman’s commercial         archetypal appeal. The final pages preview Superman tales by Barry Windsor-Smith         Alex Ross (whose beautiful painted graphic novel Kingdom Come turned many heads), and        hardback cover holds      special surprise underneath its paper wrap.
