The planet of Oa is in ruins, and Ganthet, the last Guardian of the Universe, forges a new ring that he will make sure finds its way into the right hands. On Earth, Kyle Rayner and friends hang out at a restaurant, with Kyle sketching a picture of the waitress to leave as a tip. He explains that the comic strip he’s been writing has been cancelled, and has had trouble finding another job in the business. When he leaves, Ganthet appears in the alley, and tells Kyle he’s been chosen. Kyle expresses disbelief, until Ganthet’s power ring manifests the Green Lantern uniform on Kyle. Ganthet gives the new Green Lantern brief instructions on how to use the power ring, which Kyle picks up on quickly. The flashback ends.
