Frank Miller (Author)
The Dark Knight Strikes Again Frank Miller’s follow-up his hugely successful Batman: Dark Knight Returns, one of few comics that widely recognised not only reinventing genre but also bringing it to wider audience.
Set three years after events The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again follows similar structure: once again, Batman hauls himself out his self-imposed retirement order set things right. However, where DKR was about him cleaning up his home city, Gotham, DKSA has him casting his net much wider: he’s out save world.
The thing is, most of world doesn’t realise that it needs be saved–least all Superman Wonder Woman, who have become little more than superpowered enforcers of status quo. So, notoriously solitary Batman forced recruit some different superpowered allies. He also has his ever-present trusty sidekick, Robin, except that he is she, she calling herself Catwoman. Together, se super-friends uncover vast far-reaching conspiracy that leads to President of United States (Lex Luthor) beyond.
The Dark Knight Strikes Again largely an entertaining comic, but much what made The Dark Knight Returns so good just doesn’t work here. Miller’s gritty, untidy artwork was perfect DKR’s grim depiction of dark seedy Gotham City, but it jars bit DKSA, which meant depict an ultra-glossy, futuristic technocracy. Lynn Varley’s garish colouring attempts add slicker sheen, but artwork ultimately let down by that which worked so well DKR–this time around, it just feels sloppy rushed. The same true of book’s denouement, which happens so quickly that it leaves reader reeling looking more an explanation. Moreover, DKSA packed full characters who will mean little those unfamiliar with DC Comics universe (eg, The Atom, The Elongated Man, The Question).
Perhaps book’s biggest failing that where The Dark Knight Returns gave comic book fans base from which evangelise to uninitiated, The Dark Knight Strikes Again just preaching to converted. Comic book superhero fans will find much enjoy here, but others would be better off sticking with original.
